BACKACHE

Most pregnant women experience back pain, usually starting in the second half of pregnancy.

The common causes are

  • Weight Gain: 25-30 pounds weight gain in pregnancy usually strains the spine and the growing baby and uterus put pressure on blood vessels and nerves in the pelvis and back, causing backache.

  • Posture changes: With increase in weight , the centre of gravity changes and strains back.

  •

  • Hormone changes: progesterone increases in pregnancy and relaxes the bones, ligaments and joints, causing strain and backache.

  •

  • Muscle separation: Due to increase in abdominal girth, the muscles of the front abdomen can separate  (the rectal abdominis muscles) .This separation may worsen back pain.

  •

  • Stress :  Emotional stress can cause muscle tension in the back, which may be felt as back pain or back spasms.

Treatment

  • Simple stretching and regular low intensity exercise: Pilates, swimming and walks.

  • Acupuncture

  • Good posture and relaxation

  • Heat and cold packs

  • avoid lifting heavy objects

  • bend your knees and keep your back straight when lifting or picking up something from the floor

  • move your feet when turning round to avoid twisting your spine

  • wear flat shoes as these allow your weight to be evenly distributed
